A Vast Collection: The museum holds around 93% of Still’s lifetime output. That’s over 3,125 works, including about 825 paintings and 2,300 works on paper.

An Artist’s Vision: Still wanted his work to be viewed together to show the story of his artistic growth. He believed each piece was connected and part of one big statement. His will stated that his collection should go to a city that would create a museum just for his art.

Denver Won the Honor: After he died in 1980, many cities wanted his collection. In 2004, Still’s wife, Patricia, chose Denver because the mayor agreed to the terms of Still’s will. Patricia also gave Denver Still’s complete archives.

The Building Itself: The museum building is as special as the art inside. Designed by Allied Works Architecture, the 28,500-square-foot structure is made of textured concrete and has wooden features and windows that bring in natural light. The light is a key part of the design, making Still’s canvases come alive. There are nine galleries, a studio, storage areas, and a conservation lab.
More Than Just a Museum
The Clyfford Still Museum isn’t just a place to look at art; it’s a place to learn and connect. The museum has programs for schools and families, and they invite guest artists and curators to share new perspectives on Still’s work. Additionally, the museum launched the Institute Residential Fellowship Program, bringing artists, educators, and thought leaders to Denver to work with the museum and its collections in art, education, and social enterprise.
